Senators Urhoghide, Akinyelure dump PDP, fail to name new party
The fortunes of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dwindled further post – 2023 general election as two of it’s serving senators have jumped the boat from their party.
Senator Matthew Urhoghide representing Edo South senatorial district and Senator Ayo Akinyelure representing Ondo Central, in separate letters on Wednesday gave notification of their resignation from the party.
Both senators who are not returning in the 10th Senate did not insicate the political platform they are joining.
Senator Akinyelure expressed his appreciation to the PDP for granting him the opportunity to serve Ondo Central Senatorial District and Nigeria in the Senate of the 9th Assembly on the platform of PDP.
“I wish to use this medium to congratulate all my Colleagues both returning and outgoing for their much support and selfless service to the nation under your leadership for a job well done, and that we shall remain absolutely loyal to the Federal Republic of Nigeria as democratically elected representatives of Nigerians in the Senate of the 9th Assembly who have performed creditably well under your leadership.
“This is to enable me settle down and look forward to other areas of human and professional endeavours where | can be of value addition to my dear State, Ondo State and Nigeria in general. Once again,
“| say big congratulations for moving Nigeria forward to greater heights of development going forward in our political endeavours. While wishing the Party the best of luck in its future endeavours, please accept, the assurances of my best regards, Yours faithfully,” he said.
Urhoghide who is the chairman, Senate Public Accounts Committee said his immediate resignation of his membership from PDP “arose out of the negative political energy emanating at the moment from the irreconcilable differences and squabbles within the PDP at the national level and especially in my dear state, Edo State.
“These squabbles have spiked to levels that have made it impossible for someone like me who is a confirmed democrat to function and grow as | envisioned in my political journey. I am however grateful to the party which yielded me the platform to achieve the mission of serving my country as a two-term senator — which experience afforded me the opportunity to meet and work with all of you wonderful colleagues.
“The opportunity helped too to build and form important and lasting friendships here at the senate. Above all else, it imbued in me knowledge and experience that ! could not have gotten anywhere else.
As the 9” Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria winds down, Urhoghide congratulated his colleagues, both returning and outgoing, for the service which they rendered to the nation.
Akinyelure chairman Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions in his own notification said his own resignation will take effect from 11″ June, 2023 when he must have completed his 4 years tenure in the Senate of the 9th Assembly.
He said the decision came at this time since the 9th Senate is coming to an end soonest.
Senator Isah Jibrin ( APC Kogi East), has rejoiced with Nigerians on the occasion of 63rd Independence anniversary of the country.
In a statement he personally signed in Abuja on Saturday, the senator urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their believe in building a strong, united and prosperous country.
“Let us be driven forward by our zeal to strengthen our diversity, culture and beliefs as we remain one nation bound in freedom.
“To my dear constituents, I want to assure you that I will continue to be your voice in the Senate, fighting for your rights and interests with integrity and dedication.
“May this Independence day anniversary bring further positive turnaround, unimaginable fortune, unity of purpose, and breakthrough for Nigeria and Nigerians.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has indicated that China’s diplomatic and trade relationships with Nigeria, as well as the cultural exchanges between them have fostered a deep understanding and appreciation of each other’s heritage.
He said that the ties between both countries has fast tracked the industrial development of Nigeria with projects such as the Abuja-Kaduna Railway and the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project standing as a testament to the enduring collaboration.
Kalu spoke while delivering his goodwill message at the China’s 74th National Day celebrations in Abuja on Thursday.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary ( CPS), Mr. Levinus Nwabughiogu quoted the Deputy Speaker to have further remarked that Chinese products have become a staple in Nigerian households also stressed that Nigeria’s agricultural exports to China has continued to grow.
Kalu added that the symbiotic relationship has created jobs, boosted local industries, and increased the welfare of the people, adding that currently, Nigeria is China’s second largest trading partner in Africa.
He said: “The decades-long relationship between our two great nations, Nigeria and China has been mutually beneficial, particularly in recent times.
“The rich tapestry of our partnership has woven threads of cooperation in various sectors, from infrastructure development to trade, technology exchange, and cultural engagement. China’s significant investments in Nigeria have contributed immensely to the growth and development of our nation, fostering economic prosperity and stability.
“China has been a steadfast partner in Nigeria’s infrastructural development,
with projects such as the Abuja-Kaduna Railway and the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project standing as a testament to our enduring collaboration. These initiatives have not only improved connectivity within Nigeria but have also laid the foundation for sustainable economic growth.

The Deputy Speaker also urged the government of the People’s Republic of China to join Nigeria in her efforts to identify and resolve the tendencies that encourage xenophobic attacks at the world stage.
“I look forward to both countries taking increasing steps to engender people to people diplomacy in order to troubleshoot matters that encourage xenophobic tendencies”.
